Snow make pretty

Like much of the country, we got some snow here in St. Louis this past weekend, on Christmas Eve actually. Although we didn't get the city-closing totals that the East Coast did, we got a decent 4 inches, which is a nice amount. It covers everything and makes things look completely different, sort of sugar-coated.

It also does some unexpected things, like revealing where the ground is warmer.

These photos are of my flagstone patio and driveway. It amazes me that the patio was warm enough to melt most of the snow.

Those are all a bit dreary -- how about a little color?

Frozen and thawed pumpkin. Remove carefully.

These photos were taken a few days ago. The snow will be gone today, as the temp will climb above freezing then stay there all day and night, with rain likely. Luckily I have some more snow photos to share tomorrow, because cold, rainy, and muddy is my least favorite type of winter day.

I love the abstract quality of your snow photos. Very nicely seen!

After halloween, I always put the kids' jack o lanterns in the aureosulcata grove by the house. Its amazing how the freeze/thaw cycle, and the earth worms work them down to nothing! By spring, the only thing left is the stem!

Gene -- but then you have to look at an ugly melting pumpkin in your bamboo all winter long! Blech! I'd rather throw it onto the compost pile... although right now it's just sitting in a clay pot because I didn't want to trek through the snow. =)

Hi Alan - I found your great gardening blog via a comment on Pioneer Woman (the word gardening caught my eye) as I am a fellow gardener in MA (yes, with lots of snow!) I have my dream job "working" for a landscape designer. We go to one house where we have had many laughs over bamboo that has run amock. I have my own gardening blog but I am not as diligent as you but it's fun. anne

Anne -- welcome! I'm in MO, but I work for a company based in MA so know lots of people there. =) I'm curious what species of bamboo it is at that house? If you're not sure, send photos. Actually, I'd love to see photos of the escaped bamboo, so send some if you have them. (or email me for more details)

Well....I don't have photos (but I can take some this spring if we go back)and I have no idea what kind it is. It does look like the December pictures of bamboo on your blog. We took it as a personal challenge to dig out the shoots/rhizomes that were popping up in unwanted places and by the time we were done, I'd had enough of bamboo, although I took some stalks home to use as stakes in my vegetable garden!
