I like this ice.

The front edge of a huge winter storm that was forecast to produce blizzard conditions in St. Louis came through today and coated everything in ice. As a grower of plants that don't necessarily enjoy being weighed down and stressed to the breaking point I'm not particularly fond of ice in general.

I do love looking at it though, especially up close.

So instead of showing you photos of bamboo bowed to the ground, tree limbs drooping low, and large ornamental grasses flattened, I'm going to show you what I think is the beauty of an ice-coated garden up close. Every feature wrapped in glass, from the stoutest limb to the thinnest wisp. Icicles everywhere.

As I write this in the evening, we hadn't gotten the snow that was expected, which could have been 15" or more. Instead we got sleet all day long. I'm not sure how I feel about the snow missing us... somewhat disappointed as I love deep snow, but somewhat relieved too.

At least I'm sure of how I feel about looking at this ice on my plants: I love it!

  1. Stunning photos Alan - you are quite the photographer. Glad you are seeing the positive side of sleet which we are getting now - or maybe it's rain - I haven't gone outside yet to deal with the snow/whatever is happening now on the driveway....

  2. Beautiful photos, Alan, but I can't help but think of what this storm is doing to your--and everybody else's--plants.

  3. Thanks for the compliments!

This is actually a manageable amount of ice -- no tree limbs broken (although I haven't walked around the neighborhood), and although bamboo is bent to the ground I don't think any culms snapped. We're supposed to get a couple of degrees above freezing this weekend, so we'll see if that's enough to get rid of the ice.
