Mango seed update

It hasn't been too long since I opened my first mango pit and put the damp paper towel-wrapped seed into a plastic bag, but there's already some activity going on.

Here's a quick look. (If I don't do this now, I won't remember to do it before I pot these up.)

***

The radicle has started growing on all of these, although with the seeds laying down flat they're not sure which way they should be growing:

The radicle will form the main root and is usually the part that starts growing first when any seed germinates. Some of these show growth in the other direction too, as the plumule is forming:

That last one seems the most advanced of the seeds, and it's also got the strangest seed structure, with the two halves not meeting at the edge of the flat seed:

These are really interesting seeds, probably because they're so large. I wonder why they're turning green, as they're not getting any light?

I'll be sticking at least half of these into some soil in the next couple of days, but I'm not sure how to pot them: flat? On edge? The radicle is already confused as to which direction is down, so it probably doesn't matter.

I think I'll go with on edge.

Then I just wait. Exciting!

  2. I was inspired by your previous post and saved the seeds from three mangoes. You're right, they are amazing. The most interesting seeds I've ever seen. By the time I'm ready to plant mine, you'll have figured out how to plant them :-) Sideways is probably as good a compromise as any.

  3. There seem to be websites that explain how to plant a mango seed (try ehow)but it sounds like it will work however you do it. That is still the best looking seed ever.

  4. Hm! I've got mangoes in the fridge and beaucoup pits in the compost pile. Maybe I'll have a go too. I'm a sucker for growing things from seeds.
