Ready to leave

finch
The second brood of house finches nesting in my front porch are just about ready to leave the nest. I missed their younger chick days probably because they stayed hunkered down in their really tall nest, but now that they're bigger they're standing up in the nest all of the time.
That's probably due to the unseasonably hot weather we've had for a couple of weeks -- 95ºF (35ºC) or so every day, which is 10ºF above normal. They're trying to stay cool!
"Now pay attention! If you bigger kids want to eat, you'll have to follow me." |
"I'm big. Momma, I'm big! Look how big I am!" |
"Guys, where did everybody go? Boy, it sure is hot!" |
"Guys? Anybody?" |
"Why is our nest so tall? It sure is a long way down..." |
So in a couple more days the nest will be empty, probably for the year. I think a third brood would be really uncommon, but we'll see.
Unlike last year I'm going to remove the nest and clean up that corner as soon as possible!
.
My spring robins have already left their nest, so hopefully it comes back for another brood.
What a great photo...all the nests I've ever been lucky enough to host are always too high or too hidden for me to observe or photograph. I have to be satisfied with the comings and goings of mom and dad, and the wonderfully insistent cheeping of the babies...
