What? I'm not doing anything. |
Fortunately, they're well-behaved, and never eat my plants.
There's really no need to keep watching me... |
I'm really not going to do anything to your garden! |
Oh, are these your beans? |
Ok, I left the beans alone. I'm not doing anything over here either. |
Still not doing anything... |
(This is why I can't grow hostas in most parts of my yard) |

This made me laugh. Deer are so funny. I wish we had deer insteed of RATS! Just the other day I saw one in broad daylight running along the fence, with no care in the world.
ReplyDeleteCareful what you wish for Gerhard! Deer are just rats on stilts. They've reached pestilential levels in my neighborhood, and for the first time in my life, I'm viewing the critters as vermin. I used to think they were the very soul of woodland grace. Now I wish half the population was jerky.
ReplyDeleteWell, perhaps your plants were in need of a trim. I'm sure she was trying to help you out. :)
ReplyDeleteIt breaks my heart when I hear people refer to them as pests. One day humans will have driven out all the creatures from their natural habitats and we will only be able to see them in wildlife reserves. How very sad. Sorry, but I think they are beautiful and they can come stomp on my plants anytime.
ReplyDeletePS: Love your photographs!
From a farm that raises deer, it is hard for me to have any bad feelings about them, but then they are not hoofing it through my garden either. Cute doe dining.
ReplyDeleteChristine, I felt the same way- until I learned how deer actually interface with suburbia. They're unnaturally supported in too dense of numbers by the ready food we grow for ourselves. Quite the opposite of driven out. The breed of deer here in the west doesn't travel but a few hundred yards as a home territory. When they have a lot of ready fodder, they throw more twins- which also don't spread out to new areas. They stay in that home zone they started in. You can see how quickly the numbers become unnatural, and disease amongst other problems escalates. However: These pictures are lovely, Alan.
ReplyDeleteneeds a little pepper sauce with those beans.
ReplyDeleteIts a wonder you have any plants left at all. Deer are very cute except when they are in your garden ! Are they like our rabbits - they look at the price tag and only eat the expensive ones ?!
ReplyDeleteOh I'm so glad to have met you today and to have found your blog! We will be avid followers (see, we're bowing at your feet now) and have really enjoyed these photos as well as ALL the others! Can't wait to read on. Thank you, Alan! Keep up the good work! (Amy and Tom in Glenview)
ReplyDeleteAmy (and Tom): the feeling is mutual. Thanks for visiting and for putting up with all of the questions as you worked in your yard. :-)
ReplyDeleteAlan, this deer is sooooo cute. I really can not imagine you would mind or get upset if it is eating your beans or chews a bit on your Hostas once in a while. ;) (just kidding)
ReplyDeleteWe don't have any deers around here in our neighborhood but I know about the huge problems they may cause to any garden they can get into from friends living farther out in the country. Yes, they do look cute with their big brown eyes, looking at you like they couldn't do any harm to a single one of your beans but once you turn your back to them....
Best Wishes
