Mango seed update 2

Did you know that I've been germinating some mango seeds? I've posted about this a couple of times before (here, and here), and it's time for another update. As a quick recap, I wrapped the giant seeds in wet paper towels, put them into ziploc bags, and placed them in a warm place: on top of my grow light fixture.

Then I pretty much forget about them for a few weeks at a time. Since it's been a few weeks since I last looked at them (with one exception), today I took a close look.

***

One of the plants has been out of the plastic bag for a couple of weeks. I've left it wrapped in its now-starting-to-disintegrate paper towel, and it's been sitting in a container with a small amount of water in it to keep it moist.

It's doing pretty well, but needs to get into some soil!

This is what the bagged seeds look like:

Today was the first day I unwrapped all of the other seeds in quite a while, and this is what I found:

Yahoo!

This is what each wrapped seed looks like:

Not too promising, until you look at it from the right direction:

So they're all doing great! Well, except for this one:

This one looks way too dark compared to all of the others.

As you can see, it has not germinated, and in fact is quite moldy:

Straight into the garbage with that one, but I think four small mango plants is plenty for me:

Especially since I'll have to grow these as houseplants.

Actually, four is more than plenty -- it's too many! If all of them survive, I'm going to have to give away a few of them for sure. Maybe I'll make them part of a plant trade...

In any case, I'm excited about my new little mango plants!

If you're interested in trying this, it's super simple. Here's my post on what I did.

  1. Alan, I was inspired by your earlier posts (like so many times) and stuck a mango seed in a pot of soil. No signs of leaves yet but I want to try growing a mango tree as a house plant as well.

  2. I forgot to mention that the mango seed I put outside in a pot of soil hasn't shown any signs of germination yet. I haven't dug it up, but there's no growth or evidence of roots.

You may want to try the plastic bag method.

  3. Impressive seeds call for impressive germination! Congrats on your success! :D

  4. Darn it! I forgot, just threw away a mango seed last night. I can't remember if you really scrubbed off all the flesh before putting it in the bag. I would be afraid of mold forming. What kind was the mango variety?

  5. There's nothing to scrub -- you pry the hairy pit open to get the seed out.

I don't know what variety it was. They're not labeled here. When I researched, trying to figure it out, there seems to be one main variety that is sold in most of the US... so I would guess it was that kind... except I can't remember what it was.

  6. Very impressive. I presume it will do better as a house plant and you won't expect any fruit? Mind you reading your blog anything is possible...
