More butterflies

As I've said before, I can't help myself when it comes to butterflies. I love watching them and photographing them.

Of course this means that you have to see more butterfly photos. I hope that's not a problem.

When I was in the 6th grade we went to camp for a week during the school year. One of my most vivid memories of that trip was of one of my classmates on the top bunk freaking out because he thought a moth landed on him.

Standing up, jumping around, pulling at his pajamas, ruffling his hair and throwing his blankets, yelling the whole time -- he was really terrified.

"I hate moths" was his explanation after he calmed down. (Probably wasn't the best idea to choose a top bunk near the bare light bulb then, was it?)

I wonder if he still feels that way, and if he feels the same way about butterflies?

If so, I sure hope he's not reading.

At this point you may be thinking: "didn't I already see this post a couple of weeks ago?". Well, something similar for sure. I can't help it that black swallowtail butterflies are frequent and common visitors to my garden right now.

How about something a little different then? This is what is probably a Fiery Skipper, but these little Skippers and Skipperlings are so difficult to ID, as there are so many similar but localized species.

This one loves the hyacinth bean vine flowers, and must have been just about the only one drinking from these specific blooms because it stayed here for quite a while, allowing me to snap a few photos before flitting away.

I think that will be it on butterflies for a while*. My moth-hating gradeschool classmate is glad about that.

(*This could change at any time. It all depends on who shows up in my yard when I've got the camera handy.)

  1. I love the skippers. They were abundant in my garden last summer but I haven't seen as many this year. I can't help myself when it comes to butterflies, either - I love watching and photographing them and looking at the photographs that others have taken.

  4. You can never have too many butterfly photos, especially when they are different to ours. I think the hyacinth bean flower is very pretty. I saw it growing at Monticello on a visit some years back and bought some seeds home. It never really grew for me. It must have been too cold. Good to see it again.
