They love them so much, they can't even wait until they open to rummage around in them.
Every evening, as dusk approaches, the bees start arriving.
They try to force their way into the not-yet loosened blooms.
At first they can't manage it, but once the blooms open a bit more they can start squeezing their way in.
They spend a remarkably long time inside there...
There is apparently a lot of pollen in there. |
...or perhaps it just seems that way when I've got the camera held inches away, trying to hold it in focus to capture their emergence.
Here are a couple of videos so you can see them squeezing in:
It's interesting to note that the blooms are usually open 15 minutes after this, but I guess the bees just can't wait.
Incidentally, the plant is really huge now... about 6' across!
The seed pods that I haven't removed recently are getting quite large now too:
This could be actual size, depending on the size of the screen you're using right now. |
I can see why the bees are so eager to visit!
.
That is the most amazing floral video I have watched. I think they need to get back to the hive and unload. Would may entry a lot easier.
ReplyDeleteThis is one stunning plant. Do you have others, or is this the only one? I'd love to have some seeds.

I love my moonflower too. Those bees are persistent.
