more color, more

Just when I think that the autumn colors are done for the year, a few of the smaller plants in my garden crank up the vibrancy.

I know I post about this barberry every fall, but I can't help it. It's not very large, but produces a fantastic array of colors, making this back corner of my garden glow for a few days.

This may be a variety of barberry that is somewhat invasive, but as I haven't seen any evidence of berries or seedlings yet, it gets to stay around for another year at least.

My 'Boskoop Glory' Japanese maple that needs a new pot (I never got to that project this year) is starting to show how it may have gotten its name. I love the splotches of color!

Hmmm, a lot of reds in this post. How about a maypop leaf for contrast?

Now, on to a plant that surprised me with its autumn color: blueberry. This is the first year I've grown blueberries, and didn't know that they have such beautiful fall color!

My favorite autumn leaves have a mixture of red, yellow, and green. The blueberry bushes certainly have that trait -- at least this year.

Beautiful!

I was about to type "that's the last color for this season", but I've been fooled before, so I'm not going to say that.

There aren't too many deciduous plants still holding leaves though...

  1. One of my blueberry species seems to hold it's leaves all through out the winter and not shed them until the new growth occurs in the spring. They are getting bushier each year and as far as results, I have found that the ones growing in pots with a mostly peat moss mixture are doing much better than the ones growing in the ground maybe due to PH or the heat from the nursery pots.

Also different species of blueberries seem to have completely different fall colors despite looking fairly similar throughout the year.

  2. Beautiful colors, all of them - I check my remaining leaves every day and my fothergilla is now looking like the inside of a nice ripe butternut squash!

  3. Alan, echoing what others have said already: beautiful photos. I was Home Depot last week and from a distance I saw a glowing red shrub. I walked over, and it turned out to be a blueberry!
