New plants, thinking ahead

I've got a little project coming up soon... maybe this weekend. Remember the terrarium makeover I did last winter? When I converted my lush, humid greenery-filled terrarium (before I let the plants die) into a dry, succulent-filled low-maintenance thing of beauty?

Well, one of the plants in there isn't thriving, so I plan on replacing it.

While at the local Home Depot last weekend I dropped into the houseplant section (indoors) to look at the succulent selection in the "cactus" area.

This one is really quite small.

I found a couple of plants I like, one fuzzy and taller, the other spikey and short. (Strictly speaking I only needed one plant, but it's hard to come home with a loner.) I was trying to keep in mind the terrarium plant I'm going to replace:

I think this guy needs much more light than I can give it, or perhaps something else is wrong:

It's just not looking great. Scraggly, having lost many of its lower leaves. But I've not had the time to tackle this project yet, so the new plants sit in front of the south-facing kitchen window, waiting. I have to choose carefully the plants that can sit here, as the curious cats will cause problems if I make a bad choice.

I'm hoping to do this project over the weekend, and will give you an update on the rest of the plants in the terrarium at that time.

Until then I'm enjoying having these in the kitchen, as I get to look at them several times a day. I don't know about you, but I want to look at new plants all the time!

  1. That Kalanchoe tomentosa you got looks like a good replacement. And it's wonderful plant to touch, like many kalanchoes.

What is the sickly plant, by the way? Some type of sedum?

  2. I don't know what the sickly plant is... might be a sedum, but seems too upright for that. I don't know a lot about the warm-climate sedums though.

  3. Oh now THIS I am really interested in - especially seeing how you do it. I've always wanted a terrarium but my track record with indoor plants is not good (read: pathetic) so I've resisted. But maybe ... So I'd really like to see how you do this.

Looking at new plants? All the time. Relieved I'm not the only one - I thought I was very weird and alone in this "admiring the new plants all the time" obsession I have :)

  4. Is the one not thriving a panda plant (Kalanchoe tomentosa)? I'm new to succulents and thought I saw this elsewhere???
