Things are going great in the edibles department this year so far. Whether it's because I have enough good soil now, the winter was mild, or spring was very early this year (or all of these) I've been happy with the veggies. But more details about that in another post soon. Today is about the blooms.
The zucchini squash is the bloom king right now:
I'm hoping to finally have some zucchini this year. I'd love to be one of those people who have so much of these squash that I'm leaving bags on neighbor's front steps. In two years I've gotten zero fruits, so I hope this is the year.
What gives me hope is the peas:
I usually have so little success with these, but this year they're doing fantastic! I hope they inspire the zucchini (and everything else) to greatness too.

Potted onion flowering. I love these! |
Some of the plants have flowers that are too small to photograph well: the kale is almost flowered out and is almost ready to be pulled out. The Mexican sour gherkins have so tiny flowers, perfectly fitting for their tiny fruits -- new to me this year. I also didn't photograph the tomato blooms, although there are a few already.
There are plenty of zucchini blooms photos though, as I love their wrinkly, crumpled texture.
I also love all of these plants themselves that have been feeding us for the past couple of months, with the promise of more fresh, healthy food to come!

Great pics, Alan, I love vegetable blooms! My tomatoes are blooming now, looks like a bumper crop coming!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos! I have the exact same zucchini hope for this year; fingers crossed for a summer of plenty...
ReplyDeleteWow, I think I might like these flowers more than the ornamentals. That zuccini bloom is gorgeous as are the onions!!
ReplyDeleteI wonder why you weren't getting any zucchini in previous years? We usually have so much, we don't know what to do with it. Unlike things I might want--they won't grow. I guess it's always that way :-).
ReplyDeleteHello, I'm just looking about to see what other blogs are out here. Lovely photos of your veggie blooms! There's something so satisfying about picking something straight from the plant to eat. I just love it.
ReplyDeleteGerhard: squash vine borers I believe are the main reason. I'm trying a new strategy this year... we'll see how it works.
ReplyDeleteIf you have vine borers you planted too soon, I have yet to plant mine. I think Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) does a fine job on them though. Also do not forget the blooms are edible, delightful when stuffed with cheese and lightly sautéed.
ReplyDeleteJohn: how late do you plant? I've got a couple more plants that haven't been put out yet. I;m going to start more seeds too.
ReplyDeleteAs late as I can stand which is about now for this year.
ReplyDeleteWho knew veggies could be so beautiful?
