These plants are not accustomed to 105ºF (40ºC), when the once-friendly sun turns vicious and burns.

The hose can bring some relief, but it's not enough. We need cooler air and moisture over everything -- like much of the Midwest.
The thing that scares me most is this is still early in the summer. We don't usually get our hot days until later in July and August.
.
I agree. It's too hot and too early in the season. We have a newer tree that's been sickly, the heat has just about finished it, and I'm letting it go. We had a hot, dry summer in 2003 and our city declared a water ban by August. I'm concerned the same thing may happen again this year.
ReplyDeleteI've been using 5 gallon buckets with a tiny hole drilled in the side bottom to water all my small trees, shrubs, and roses. It seems to be helping them, tho the leaves are getting sun scorched (my Japanese Maples look just like yours).
ReplyDeleteTeri, that bucket idea is a good one! I'm spending my evenings wandering around moving hoses from tree to bush to shrub. Doing my level best to keep everything watered, but we need a break here soon. Supposed to be cooler by the weekend...let's hope!
ReplyDeleteEveryday I look at your weather and shake my head in disbelief. I hope you'll get a break soon.
ReplyDeleteUGH...that's so disheartening...it's scary to see even the succulents suffering in the heat. I'm crossing my fingers you get some relief...and SOON!
ReplyDeleteIt's not all bad... for those who like the weather almanac, we're breaking records every day. For example, yesterday's 105ºF beat the previous record of 102. As a bonus, the low temp of 83ºF was a record high minimum temp too. Yahoo! (Today's forecast 104 should be a record too, as should tomorrow's 108.)
ReplyDeleteAfter looking at these pictures I almost feel guilty for doing a happy dance that our sun and heat has finally arrived (86-88 over the weekend with no rain in the 10 day forecast). We're heat wimps out here in the PNW...I don't know how you all do it. I wish we could share our abundant June rain with you...
ReplyDeleteThe hottest it has been is in the low to mid 90s here so there hasn't been that many problems. With 105F, it looks very hard to keep everything protected. There also doesn't seem to be any rain in the near future.
ReplyDeleteOh man, that is so heartbreaking to see. That's what we looked like this time last year in Central Texas. We've had a couple or three of triple digit days where I am, and immediately the plants showed stress. Anything over 90º is just too danged hot! Hope you get a break soon and while I'm wishing, rain for both of us.
ReplyDeleteawww ... this is sad. I wish I could send you some of our rain. Am holding thumbs you get some soon.
ReplyDeleteThat is so sad! I hope you get rain soon. Living in a pretend desert is no fun...
