It's, it's... wet!!

The remnants of hurricane Isaac hit the Midwest this weekend, and here in St. Louis we've had a couple of days of on again, off again showers -- often heavy. For the first time since probably the start of June I have a seriously wet garden.

I mean just soaked. The ground is soft, actually moving a bit when you walk on it. I couldn't resist taking photos of the wonderful wetness yesterday morning.

At the time I took these photos, we had received about 2" of rain total. That's more than the total rainfall for the previous three months -- at least here in my yard. My rain gauge (a jar) has more than just warm air in it now:

The only downside to rain is it makes many of the bamboos flop over:

I really need to do something about that Phyllostachys nigra to keep it more upright... maybe I'll do that this morning.

I'm not the only one who likes quiet, wet mornings in the garden. While taking "drooping bamboo" photos I noticed I wasn't alone:

I see you back there!

Back to water droplets, which I love photographing:

Whew, so many wonderful droplets! Let's take a step back now, okay?

The pond is full again (and I didn't have to add the water myself!) and doing so well:

It's surpassed my expectations for this year, even with the algae problem I'm still dealing with. I can't imagine my garden without it now!

I can't believe that I'm not going to have to water anything for several days at least. A day without dragging the hoses around is going to seem... empty? Boring? No, I think the word I'm looking for is FANTASTIC!

I've actually rolled the hoses up and put them away for the first time in months!

My backup rain gauge -- an old, crusty paint bucket I found in a corner of the basement, left by previous owners. I couldn't believe that I saw a couple of mosquito larvae in there already -- one drawback to having a wet garden.

If you're experiencing drought this summer, I hope you've gotten some relief from this storm. If not, I sincerely hope you get rain soon!

(Update: the rain gauge is almost full this morning, so that's another inch or more we got last night. Yahoo!)

  2. Awesome photos! They make me long for rain even more. We have another six weeks at least before we can expect our first rain.
