a walk and a look

Some days I just walk around the garden and enjoy. See what I can find. Something interesting. Something inspiring, beautiful.

 Maybe it was just my mood, but I found quite a few things like that yesterday.

The castor bean leaves look like autumn all summer long.

Elephant ears starting to yellow a bit, but wonderful when seen from behind:

Papyrus is a star in my garden. Neighbors and visitors always ask about this one:

The "Home Run" roses are going crazy again with the cool weather:

Due to lower angle of the sun in this half of the year, some plants that were in full sun earlier are now getting a bit of shade:

I've been planting some more bamboos recently. This one (Phyllostachys arcana) went into a little clearing in the woody common ground behind my yard, just on my property line:

It might be difficult to contain, but I'll see what it does for a couple of years.


This clumping Fargesia 'Rufa' has been in this spot behind the pond in a container all year, and I finally decided to plant it:

This is its parent plant, which gets too much sun so gets a bit of burn each summer. I should probably water it every day next summer to see if that helps.

As long as I'm back here, I have to show you this Sasaella bitchuensis again:

Every single time I pass it I think "that is a beautiful bamboo!"


Speaking of beautiful, more castor bean leaves. It won't be long until they're gone:

I think I planted this newer Miscanthus 'Silberpfeil' too close to the 'Gracillimus':

It's getting big! Nice though. If it stayed this size it would be perfect, but I expect it gets much larger.

Finally, this volunteer Celosia 'Flamingo Feather' made it through summer in a hot spot: right at the edge of the driveway in the front annual bed:

I know it's a tough plant, but the soil there must be quite hot, and being right on the edge of the bed it didn't get as much hose water as everything else here.

It's shorter than it has been other years, but I think it's probably more attractive this way.
