Frost, not on bamboo

As you probably know, frost does not limit itself to coating bamboo, so here are the other things I saw the other morning out in the cold.

What amazes me most about frost is how it looks so different on various surfaces: like sugar crystals, or flakes, or spikes, or curlicues, all depending on the material on which it has formed. I didn't mention this yesterday, but the frost forms differently on many of the bamboo leaves depending on species too. I'm not here to analyze why though -- I just want to show you the pretty.

Okay, not frost, but so pretty!

Temperatures won't be getting below freezing for the next few days, so no more beautiful frost for a while. That's fine with me though -- bring on the mild!

Is there any one of these images that is your favorite? I think I like the square frost on the chair arm (IMGP1112) image best, but it's hard to choose.

  1. Awesome! The one with the frost accentuating the grain of the 2x4 is my fave!

  2. The ice on the water (pond?) is my favorite... yes, not frost, but still so cool! Ha! Literally!

After your comment about the macro on the point and shoot, I'm going out early tomorrow to get my own frost photos. And ice on the pond photos. So thanks for the reminder!

Now I just need some advice on how to take pictures of my fish - I get so much reflection off the surface of the water, even on a cloudy day. Maybe I need one of those underwater camera covers like we used to use while snorkeling?

  3. Lisa: buy a circular polarizer. It's the only way to eliminate the glare from the water's surface. Or as a test, just hold a polarized sunglass lens in front of the camera and rotate it until the reflections go away.

  5. wow amazing pics! I like the second one the most, it's funny to think what this does to plants when I don't cover them here down in Texas. We are having a really mild winter here. I covered last two nights, but not tonight. thanks for sharing!
