The obvious solution

As you may remember, earlier this year I bought several cold-hardy but moisture-hating Agaves and Yuccas. My goal was to get them into planting beds this year, along with my cold-hardy cactus.

That goal was not met (but I did create some soil mounds as a first step), so the potted plants remain on my driveway. I was concerned about that one Agave during the summer, but it seems like that was nothing to worry about. I do have other concerns though...

You see, a couple of these are starting to show signs of rot:

Not all of them though. The Agave neomexicana is going great and producing pups:

The Yuccas are in great shape too:

That's Y. rostrata 'Sapphire Skies' in back and Y. nana in front, both doing so well!

Back to the problems though. As I was cleaning out the area under the deck stairs, I found this old table which I thought would make a great "umbrella" to keep any more moisture from falling on the Agaves that are in trouble:

Then I took a step back and turned my head a few degrees to the left:

Those half barrels I got from Schlafly Gardenworks earlier this year should be perfect! Why didn't I think of these earlier? They've only been sitting idle on the driveway for a couple of months.

With the Agaves tucked underneath away from the the holes, they shouldn't get any more moisture this winter. I hope that will prevent any further rotting.

Is there anything else I should do with the troubled Agaves?

  1. Great solution to keep them out of the rain!

As for the agave, repot it in completely dry soil and keep it away from the rain. In your garage would be best, with regular light.
