Be lazy, make fun!

The bamboo that is growing outside my kitchen window has been bothering me since May or so. It's got this one culm that bends outside of the main clump, taunting me with its individuality.

It screams to me "this is a messy planting", and makes the whole bamboo look a little less attractive. Luckily I've never gotten around to removing it though, as it provides entertainment every day now.

I added a bird feeder over here in the fall, and that has brought the birds. The offending culm hangs right over the feeder:

So the following scene plays out several times each day:

"Hey guys, I need some help here!"

"Sorry little fellow, I'm happy up here."

"I'll help!  -- No, you idiot, you have to sit down here!"

"Morton, why don't you go help the poor little thing out?"

"C'mon you little dimwits, do it just like this"

"Way to go Morton! Mrff. Chomp. Great... nrff... work!"

"Good work chums, just about there..."

"Success! I'm next in line at the feeder,
so remember to hang on when I let go!"

It's so much fun watching the birds ride the bouncy bamboo culm while waiting for an opportunity to grab another seed or two.

How can I remove that culm now?

  1. That's awesome Alan! Watching birds is one of the best things about a wildlife friendly garden with feeders in it!

  2. My whole family thinks I'm loony, but I do love to watch "my" birds. They all have their own little habits and personalities which makes it fun! And you feel like you've contributed to nature when you've had a hand in creating an environment that attracts wildlife... or at least this loon feels that way!

  3. LoL.. I have catbirds doing similar activities during summertime at the bird bath. I really think I should add a bird feeder to the mix.
