January at the Gardenworks

Yesterday was the first Saturday of the month, and that means a visit to Schalfly Gardenworks.

It's not as lush and green as it was this summer of course, but there's still quite a lot going on.

It's fun to just meet with other gardeners once a month, see what's new, pick up little tips. What made the trip extra worthwhile though was the free manure:

I wish my truck could dump like that.

As the small group of dedicated gardeners got ready to start shoveling manure into bags, I took the opportunity to snap a few photos of the now-empty garden.

Garlic - lots of it!

Greens waiting for a warm-up to start growing again

Kale and spinach under row covers for those few cold nights

The new hoophouse. Beautiful swiss chard!

The focus of this garden is food production, but it's
beautiful too, even now. What garden isn't?

Here's the entire garden:

Looks much different than it did back in June, doesn't it?

I got at least one great tip from this gathering, and it's nice to see who the diehard gardeners are, showing up on a 30ºF (-1ºC) morning. See you again next month!

  1. So different everything looks in winter. I like the hoop house. Is this something one can make?
