Surprise!

There was a chance of snow last night, with accumulations of up to 1" (2.5cm) expected -- in St. Louis that really means "it's not going to snow". They were a little off in their estimate.

We awoke today to about 3" (7.5cm) of the white stuff, a sunny and bright morning. I couldn't resist taking lots of photos, as snow this winter has been rare.

Yesterday I was working with some of the bamboos, rhizome pruning. The ground was not frozen and contained just the right amount of moisture to make it easy to dig in -- no digging for me today though. Not that I couldn't dig if I wanted too, but muddy snow is one of my least-favorite winter sights.

I suspect the snow will quickly melt, as today's high is expected to be 40ºF (4ºC), and it will reach 50ºF (10ºC) or more the next couple of days.

It's a nice taste of winter as spring approaches, and the precipitation is welcome. (January precip is a little above normal, but that follows several below-average months.)
