weedy, but nice

weeds
It's spring again, and that means its time for a look at my early-season "alternative lawn" plants.
In other words, the weeds that seemingly will always be part of my garden. Starting with henbit.
Does it look like I have a big drift of this?
Well, I do. I love the flowers though:
Next up is wild strawberry, which is the most evergreen of the weeds in my yard:
It's not flowering, but it's not so bad to look at, right?
It gives me something to do in the garden when there's nothing else going on. Of course it forms the thickest mats in the planting beds.
Okay, let's try something a bit more nice:
That's more like it! Beautiful bittercress.
What, you have something against drifts of "volunteer" plants?
I also have these in groupings:
and as specimen plants too:
I suppose you don't like violets either, do you?
I think I've decided that it's impossible to get rid of these from this yard, so I've decided to live with them. They'll be beautiful when in flower in a month or two...
Hey, what's that?
It's a flower forming on Viola odorata, the one that something keeps eating. Maybe I should check the plant that is in a more protected area...
Wow! I had no idea these would bloom so early! So fragrant too! They're not spreading nearly as quickly as I had hoped though. My plan was to have them share the yard with the non-fragrant violets.
There is this one seedling I found next to the air conditioner:
A pot had fallen over it, so it's not looking great, but I'm glad to see it still. I wonder if there are any others around?
Do you have any "pretty" weeds growing in your springtime gardens?
.
Well, not yet. And it's a good thing, too since there's SNOW in our forecast. Will it never end?
I would love to have some of those Violets in my lawn...so charming.
Ah, henbit and cress! I spent a couple of days recently on hands and knees weeding those out of my beds, so much that I actually dreamed of weeding more when I went to sleep.
I love violets. Our Viola odora are spreading but haven't become a nuisance yet.
Since my garden is mostly indoor I haven't encountered any weeds yet, but these are, like you said, kind of pretty!
I think that is better called red deadnettle. Henbit is a stalky thing with projecting flowers while your specimen has flowers under its leaves.
Same genus of course.
Thanks Daron! It is indeed red deadnettle (Lamium purpureum)
