Catching up
When I'm out and about I typically don't have my DSLR with me, so it's down to the phone camera when I see something that needs to be snapped. Fortunately phone cameras are getting quite good, and as the old photographer adage goes "the best camera is the one you have with you", so I don't hesitate to take shots of something that interests me even a little bit.
The problem is, once they're on my phone I tend to forget about them. Only when looking for some specific old photo do I come across them and realize that I never shared. Today I'll show you a few of these.
Starting with a trip to the local post office early this week, where a row of yucca are in full flower, creating a very impressive display:
These yucca (which I believe are Y. filamentosa -- I'd appreciate confirmation) are quite common in the St. Louis area, as they have no problems growing in our clay soils, take the heat and humidity of summer but also the coldest winter weather, and will even grow in a surprising amount of shade. They're almost impossible to kill too, with established plants coming back from the big taproots even after being run over with heavy equipment.
Plus they spread to form colonies, so it seems that everybody always has some of these to share -- I know I do.
I've never seen them in such a large planting though -- really nice!
Next up, we're going back into early May:
I assume that these are oats, but I'm not certain. They look so nice when planted en masse like this, aren't they? I have a few of these that came from seeds in the straw I used in my veggie beds this year. They're okay as an individual stalk, but nowhere near as impressive as this!
And finally, clouds!
I love watching cloud formations change over time, and earlier this week I was able to do so quite leisurely: lying on a blanket at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

During summer they hold free music concerts on Wednesday nights, with free admission to the gardens after 5:00, picnicking, and great live music. To get a good spot you need to arrive early, hence plenty of cloud watching time.
It eventually got too dark to take any more cloud photos, so the phone stayed in my pocket for the rest of the night.
(The photos of Boston I posted about yesterday were forgotten as well.)
Note: although you may think that the yucca and cloud photos that were taken earlier this week don't fit into the "forgotten" category as they were just a few days old, believe me when I say that they were already completely forgotten.
Do you have "forgotten" photos on your phone too?
.
I do forget photos on my phone, too, but they're usually of the kids or the dog.
Those yucca blooms are stunning! They do look like Y. filamentosa. In my experience, this species needs much more water to thrive than desert-dwelling yuccas. Hence its ability to tolerate heavy clay soils.
Uhm...sorry I was going to comment but now I've got to go see what photos are on my phone that I've forgotten...
