This morning I was lucky -- I happened to catch a glimpse of something exciting through the kitchen window...
A fawn! It was browsing at the side of the house, so I grabbed the camera and quietly moved out onto the deck.
Although we don't really need more deer in the neighborhood, seeing the little ones is always special.
There were two of them out here this morning!
From a recent episode of Nature about deer I learned that their eyesight is quite poor -- they focus on movement instead. So although these two were keeping a close eye on me at first...
...I moved as little as possible...
...and they eventually relaxed. Somewhat.
They finally moved into the same frame too:
This one liked to stretch as it walked. It's about as close as I'll come to seeing a giraffe in my yard:
Glad to see you around little ones! Remember, tasting is fine, but take a bite and move on to the next plant, okay?
Have you seen any fawns in your garden yet this year?
.
Nice pictures!
ReplyDeleteI hope you list some of them on those stock photos websites.
Well, they start out cute anyway... Then they are nothing but super big rodents. That you don't want to hit with your car.
ReplyDeleteAwe!! That is so cute!! I would love love to have deer, but we don't get them. The small grysbok (bokkies are the closes thing to deer in Africa) is so timid it will never come to residential areas. How amazing that must have been! THanks for haring!
ReplyDeleteYou are so big-hearted! I tend to hold Lisa's opinion. You know how you did that contraption to keep the robins away from your blueberries? I'm waiting for you to figure out a deer contraption! In the meantime, I've taken to spraying Liquid Fence, which seems to work better than sprinkling Milorganite. When I spray, it seems like I get a FEW blossoms to enjoy rather than a decimated landscape! - a "dear" Virginian
