It rained again this weekend (I'll gladly give up some weekend garden time if this continues throughout the summer!) so I was just poking around with my camera when I heard a few barred owls calling down the street.
I went to try and get a glimpse of them (I didn't) and on the walk back I noticed my neighbor's ash tree has a fantastic covering of moss and lichen, and I couldn't resist taking lots of photos.
There are a few shots of my own ash tree mixed in here -- you can recognize it by the tiny amount of moss. Strange, as both trees seem to be growing with the same exposure under the same conditions. My neighbor does have an irrigation system for watering her lawn that possibly hits the trees... but that doesn't explain the moss 10' (3m) up -- does it? Hmmm.
I sure love moss and lichen!

Moss + lichen = sight for dry eyes. We won't see moss and lichen for another 4-5 months.
Very cool! I remember learning at outdoor education camp that moss and lichen are edible. So if you ever get hungry while roaming your neighborhood... : )
