Although the fall color has not yet peaked here, most of the trees are starting to do their thing, turning those amazing colors for a day or two or more if we're lucky and weather conditions are right.
Still, a sunny weekend gave me lots of opportunity to see these colors, and I just had to get started on the autumn photos. Above the dark ninebark contrasts nicely with the yellowing background right now.
The bald cypress is probably the king of color in my yard, but only in the morning and late afternoon, when the angle of the sun is right:
The feathery foliage on this tree catches the light in such a special way, making it look as if it is illuminated from within:
I wasn't planning on taking photos of the fall color yet, but seeing this tree yesterday morning made me interrupt my chores, go back into the house to grab the camera, and start shooting.
The twisted white pine isn't as colorful, but as it readies to drop half of its needles, the color contrast captivates:
What makes the colorful leaves in my yard more wonderful is the contrast with the always-green bamboo foliage:
What would autumn be without japanese maples?
It would be lots of brown I think.
Edit: one more photo I forgot:
Not the typical fall color, but 'Niobe' Clematis is adding to the scenery quite nicely!
Has the autumn color reached your area yet? (I apologize for excluding my southern-hemisphere friends with this question, but since you're enjoying spring right now I'm guessing no apologies needed.)
.
Japanese maple is the best in autumn. This year around here in Vermont, even the weeds are showing great color.
ReplyDeleteWe're still a few weeks away from the peak. Most trees are just now starting. Love that bald cypress. I didn't know you had one.
ReplyDeleteGerhard: probably because I planted it just before starting this blog, but I've written about it several times before: http://www.itsnotworkitsgardening.com/search/label/bald%20cypress

ReplyDeleteI just realized -- don't other trees start changing colors on the outermost leaves first? The bald cypress is opposite!
ReplyDeleteI was in Asheville NC over the weekend and took a photo of what I now know to be a bald cypress! The sun coming through it was brilliant. http://pookandbug.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteAs always, your photos are stunning! I just commented to my husband this afternoon that our burning bushes are especially colorful this year. And our poor crabapple that is gorgeous in full flower, then loses all it's leaves by mid-July (some kind of fungal problem - ugh) is once again a highlight with all the bright red apples. I love fall!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lisa! Soon it will be all grey branches and bamboo, so have to fill up on color while still possible.
ReplyDeleteLove love the colour and it looks as if you painted this!
