Nice, but not sure...

Remember the simple red bench I created last year? I still haven't found a permanent home for it in my garden, but recently I had an idea.

Since it doesn't seem like I'm going to be able to cross "build a small deck by the pond" off my list of 2013 projects, but I spend more time sitting next to the pond than any other part of my garden, why not try the bench here? (Ignore the half-rotten pallets in the background please!)

So I spent a couple of minutes getting the blocks somewhat level and stable, and gave it a shot:

I like it, but it's not quite right. It's probably a little too far from the pond, but there was a lot of mulch there and I didn't feel like digging very much. It feels a little awkward being in the middle of this space. I'll probably move it forward a couple of feet and see how that goes.

Still, it looks quite nice back here, so I'm thinking of making it permanent. I'll give it a few more weeks of trial before I decide though.

Any thoughts?

(I'm still a little hesitant to make this even semi-permanent, because as soon as I do I'll decide that I can build the deck.)

I like the color. Maybe covering the blocks with mosses, and adding a carpet of creeping thyme towards the pond connecting the spaces?
I'm a fan of seats with backs. They feel safer for this nap loving dozing garden person.

I'd say build the deck first and then worry about a bench. A hammock might be even better! That way you could doze off looking at the pond.

Maywyn: Moss will last from February until May (perhaps). I've learned from past experience to just let it grow where it wants to.

Gerhard: But if I don't build the deck until next year, what will I sit on until then?

I think it would look less lonely if it was over by the clump of plants at the left and angled a little. But then I can't see the whole picture and maybe you have chosen the right place after all.

Build the deck!
Sorry... Was that helpful?
