Oh, hello there! Can't really stop to chat right now, as I'm actually quite busy you see.
I know you're not very close by, watching me through that camera lens, but I'm going to keep an eye on you anyway -- nothing personal. You don't mind if I keep working, do you?
You see, I've been carving for several hours already and I really need to get this nest hole finished...
It's not really as deep as it should be yet...
...and I'm finding the whole process to be much more difficult than I imagined.
(four hours later)
Yes, I'm still at it. It's going quite well -- thanks for asking!
The hole is quite a bit deeper than it was before, as you can clearly see...
...I'm getting pretty much my entire body inside now -- or at least it feels that way. Can you still see me at all?
Ah, really? That's a bit disappointing. Maybe I should start another hole...
Although I'm really an excellent hole driller, I must admit that I'm not the best at picking the right spot to begin with...
Still though, I'm about the best hole maker you've seen, right?
The best one you've seen this year?! Really? Well, thank you!
I must get back to it now...
(I imagined this as an inexperienced male Red-bellied Woodpecker, but it's actually a female -- possibly not inexperienced, just very particular.)
.
Wow, that's so cute! Great pictures!
ReplyDeleteThis spring I discovered a nest site of a pileated woodpecker. I had no idea they can carve a tree like that.
Pileated woodpeckers are so impressive! I saw one fly from tree to tree in my yard (a decade ago when I still had many trees back there) and it was so amazing. Huge woodpeckers!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun to watch! She was definitely busy!
ReplyDeleteOh my head hurts just thinking about it!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this post...we don't have woodpeckers here, and it was quite interesting to see how hard they work to create a nesting hole.
