Reuse!

I had this old sports jug taking up room in the back of one of the kitchen cabinets. I'm putting its age at 18 years old, and as you can see it's looking a bit horrible.

Although I could use a jug like this in the yard this summer -- I sometimes have trouble keeping hydrated when involved in outdoor projects -- I didn't think it would be wise to use this for drinking water anymore, as the plastics could be leaching nasty substances.

***

I didn't want to throw it away though, as I hate putting any plastics into landfills. It's not recyclable, as it may predate widespread use of recycling labels:

Surely it must have some garden use, right? It's such an ugly thing though:

I removed the handle to see if I could, and that gave me an idea!

Drilled a few holes in the bottom...

(You can probably guess where this is going.)

I got some spray paint that is applicable for use on plastics...

...then sprayed away!

Guess what color I chose?

I painted the handle too, as it was looking a bit dingy next to the red:

A couple of coats and at least 24 hours of drying time, and it's been refreshed:

Still needs something though...

That's better!

I may drill a hole in the handle and hang this planter once the dichondra starts growing more, but for now this will just be a ground planter.

I like it!

  2. Yeah for upcycling! A very creative way to reuse what would otherwise have been a piece of junk.

  6. Amazing what a can of spray paint and imagination can do. Looks good, and handy hanging handle, too.

  9. I love your thoughtful reuse of materials, especially plastic. It has taken me a while to get to this point, but any time I make a purchase I really consider the total lifespan of both the product and it's packaging...Thank you for thinking of us.
