Wiethop Greenhouses part 2

I started showing you Wiethop Greenhouses last week, and I left off showing you the door that leads to the perennial greenhouse.

Stepping through that door puts you in what might be my favorite spot in this place, as all you can see is greenhouses whichever way you look. Straight ahead in the above photo...

***

...Or to the right:

It's an employees-only area, but it's so compelling! I wonder if I could get a look if I asked?

I could peek into the first greenhouse's ventilation window:

Look, more hanging baskets up above!

Okay, let's focus. The perennial house is a small fraction of the size of the previous rooms, but that's fine:

(Notice more fern baskets above...)

The absolute best thing about the perennials is you can get small seed-grown plants for only $2.00.

These young plants are all on the tables around the perimeter.

Many of these are common, but the price can't be beat. Why pay $14 for a single Echinacea when you can get seven of them for the same price here? If you've got a larger bed to fill or just want to take a chance on a plant, these are great!

There are some larger perennials too...

...mainly in the center of the room:

If I remember correctly, these are $8-$12, with some select plants being more expensive. Good prices though! Pretty too...

I'd buy Persicaria 'Painters Palette' if I didn't have countless seedlings already...

Sempervivum always tempts me, but they really only look this good here early in the summer...

...Plus the deer love them.

I could go for more sedum though...

...but I think I have this variety already (bought it here last year).

I consider buying some of these shade and water lovers every year...

...but I doubt I could provide them the moisture that they need. Maybe though...

Lots of young hostas which look so appealing on the table...

...but the deer again. They restrict me to planting hosta right up against the house, and I don't think I have room for more.

So that's it for the perennial greenhouse. Great prices, lots of things I already have in the garden but some "new" ones too. I want to go back to the annuals house though...

...and show you the rex begonias. I've completely ignored this group of plants for my entire gardening career, but on this visit they just called out to me. Check out these beauties:

'Dark Mambo'

'Red Kiss'

'Fedor'

'Fedor' underneath. Wow!

'Jive'

'Jive' again

'Escargot'

'Etna'

'Salsa'

Perhaps these are all quite common, but the only one that was familiar to me was 'Escargot'.

The ones that came home with me: 'Dark Mambo', 'Escargot', and 'Fedor'. They'll all have to be houseplants for me until the weather heats up, but I love them! (Rex begonia, where have you been hiding?)

So that concludes my look at Wiethop Greenhouses. I'm sure I'll visit one or twice again before they close in June...

  1. Those begonias looks so exotic isn't it? And those rows of greenhouses without any greenery outside almost looks like a set for a sci-fi film :)

  2. Did I say this last post? Probably. That place is so tidy! It's amazing, as are the prices.

  3. I'm with you on the begonias. Why have I ignored them for so long? They're totally cool and exotic.

  4. Nice to see even more of this place! The small perennial prices are super! No wonder they can move so much inventory in such a brief period!
As for the begonias, welcome to the dark side, my friend!

  5. I have always thought it would be such fun to work in a greenhouse.

  6. Mark/Gaz: or a horror film... ;)

Loree: that's probably because you're used to seeing greenhouses that are very mossy. (Which I love seeing in your posts!)

Gerhard: The dark ones are so satiny, it's really amazing. I guess it's a good thing we don't discover all plant families at the same time, right?

Peter: Dark side indeed. Beautiful stuff, you'll have to point me to more varieties!

Charlie: Me too, as long as it's my own personal greenhouse that is. :)
