I've not really done this much before, but this year I've started bringing blooms from my garden into the house.
I've always hesitated when removing blooms from the garden as I'd argue that I'd rather see them where they belong... but I'm wiser now.
Sure I can walk out to the back of the garden to see some blooms once or twice a day, but when they're on the kitchen counter I'll see them 20 times daily at least!
I created two simple arrangements this weekend, starting with mock orange and bamboo culms:
The simplicity of this one makes it so nice, except the mock orange blooms lasted for only two days. (The fresh bamboo culms will last for weeks I think and don't look too bad in the vase on their own.)
The other was created more of necessity, as the peony blooms are so droopy, in a vase is the only way to really enjoy them!
I threw a few sage flowers in there for some height. They're not the showiest blooms but it's difficult to stand out when you're next to peonies anyway.
Some other things that I've been noticing over the last couple of days in the garden...
The turtle (the same turtle?) is still around. Nothing makes mowing the lawn more nerve-wracking than to know that a turtle is hiding somewhere in the grass. (Well, maybe a rabbit nest is its equal on the mowing anxiety scale.)
The purple clematis are doing quite well, both the unknown one (maybe 'The President')...
...and the jackmanii, which got a bit of a pruning from the deer lower down but is so pretty up top:
Speaking of lower down and pretty...
The purple alliums are finished but still so nice!
Even better...
...the white alliums -- and there are half a dozen this year -- are simple but so nice...
...especially when the early evening sunlight hits them.
There's a lot to be said for sunlight hitting things the right way...
...as the japanese maple in the front always looks so great near the end of the day (as seen through the window).
What are you noticing outside right now? Are you bringing blooms indoors?
.
I am thrilled you've joined in the fun of cutting things from the garden. It really does help you to appreciate them in an entirely different way. And as you've done with the bamboo it doesn't always have to be flowers!
ReplyDeleteI love your arrangement, looks modern yet soft at the same time!
ReplyDeleteIt must be wonderful having a turtle calling the garden home: the clematis and white alliums are stunning!
ReplyDeleteI saw a turtle yesterday after a rain storm - poor thing was in the middle of the street. I put him in some tall grass, so I hope he's happier now. Love the blooms indoors. I'm experimenting with which blooms last longer inside - so far, my viburnum blooms are pretty long lasting. Sadly, I didn't get to my peonies before it rained, so now they're mush. I like how you enjoyed them while you could!
ReplyDeleteI am always torn like that too! Your orange blooms do look so pretty in the vase. You turtle looks very happy in his garden : )
