Long-awaited project: Screen

I've been thinking about doing this project for years, and since woodworking is becoming a bigger thing for me recently I decided last weekend that it was time to act.

So what can you do with an old glass shower door? (Besides store it in your garage for years I mean)

***

Well, you can start by removing the metal frame which makes a nice macro shot...

...but would interfere with the final design -- I don't think I'd put anything gold plated into my garden.

Remarkably the frame was held on with only four screws and was quite easy to remove (although the once-flexible gasket was stiff and holding things together somewhat).

The question now becomes: what can you do with a large piece of tempered, textured glass?

(Besides taking a mysterious selfie)

Well if you're me you add some wood...

...and some metal panels...

...and create a screen for the garden!

I haven't sanded it yet, hence the roughness seen in some of these images.

I'm not sure if I'll stain this colorfully or just give it a "natural" protection, as it's the first I've built.

I made it quite tall (about 8' / 2.4m) because I'm thinking it will go in one of two places, either here...

...between the two bamboos, or here...

...behind the large-leafed bamboo.

I still have to figure out how exactly I want to mount this, as it will need to be free-standing and is quite heavy.

I'll post an update after I stain it and figure that out...

(I probably should have cleaned the glass better before getting started on this...)

Incredible! This is one the best-looking screens of this type that I've seen. You're a genius.

Thank you all!

Gerhard: your comment almost sounds like one of those generic spam comments: "Great job! This article contains the best information on this topic that I have found! Feel free to visit my webpage..." ;)

I think I'd stain it. (I feel I can comment authoritatively since I rebuilt my gate.) Come to think of it, that would be a nice gate...

Hoover: Now that I've been looking at it for a few days, I agree. I just need to choose a color...
