Friday Spider

Friday the 13th, a good time for a post about a scary (for many) gardening topic: spiders!

You do know that spiders are by some measures the most important beneficial insect in the garden, don't you? They're not nearly as scary as bamboo mites, or Rose Rosette Virus, or Aloe mites, or glysophate, or neonicotinoids, or Colony Collapse Disorder, or even tetanus. Still I think this hairy and colorful little guy that I found indoors on one of my windows is appropriate for this unluckiest of days.

(Note that I used the least-detailed image above in case you're not very fond of spider images -- just scroll past the next five down to the comments if you're not an arachnid fan!)

Green iridescent fangs:

Super-hairy legs of course:

And a backside that while also hairy, seems to contain an angry monkey face (or something like that):

Sunbathing perhaps?

Legs backlit, so pretty!

I'm wondering if "Spider Friday" would be the most unpopular garden blog meme of all time? What if it were only once a month though?

I actually love photographing garden spiders!

Great photos!
I feel little guilty putting the black jumper house spider out the door the other day, but it was nesting in the curtain panel next to my desk, and didn't take the hint. Instead, it started crawling on my desk. Try to gently use a flannel rag, and it jumps back to the curtain. Next try charms. Out it went into weather is warm enough for the spider to play outdoors.

I love jumping spiders! They have so much personality and yes, they are beautiful! I would definitely welcome more spider photos.

"Angry monkey face" - ha! I do love spiders - mostly. And outdoors, preferably. But you did a good job of making me appreciate the beauty of this one!

Jumping spiders are my very favorite spiders in the garden. There's something about their little faces that look quizzical and intelligent. Yes please, more spiders!

Lisa: you see it, right?

Glad to see there are some who would appreciate "Spider Friday". We'll see...
