Rain

So much of the country is having a bad time with extreme weather, it seems wrong to complain about our own weather here in St. Louis. No blizzards, tornadoes, or anything else violent, but we have been getting more than our fair share of rain.

It's been raining pretty much non-stop since Christmas day afternoon, when we had quite heavy storms -- the dry creekbed on the south side of the house will get a makeover this summer, letting it carry much more water. Or maybe there's another solution. I enjoy spreading pretty river gravel around, but carrying it up from the bottom of the hill more than once every year is getting old.

The day after Christmas we received about 5" (12.5 cm) of rain, and it seemed to be blowing from every angle at some point in the day. Our mailbox proved to be rain-resistant only, as our mail got a bit soggy. The basement is getting some water in it too, which is never fun.

The pond though...

...already has its springtime addition of mud.

I always look forward to the crystal-clear water of winter (when there's no ice that is) so I can see all of the fish, but it looks like that might not be possible this year.

Heavy flooding in the area, trees starting to fall (those black locust do not have great root systems and like to uproot when the ground gets soggy), but mostly for us it's just soggy.

So many warnings, they can't fit them all in the forecast summary!

What are your crazy weather conditions like right now?

(Extreme weather will be the norm in the future it seems. This novel of hard science fiction may help you understand.)

  1. Sorry you've getting so much rain. Maybe if it stays warm, the silt will settle so the pond will go clear.

Slow small snow falling on what looks like about 4 inches on the ground at the present time here in mid Vermont on the Lake Champlain side (about 5 miles away).

Its funny, Google places keywords Lake Champlain in the middle of the lake. On the directions from Vergennes to the lake, Google says Lake Champlain is about 68 miles away by way of New York State. Hilarious.

  2. Five inches is a lot of rain to get in one day! Yikes. It's sunny and cold here. Lows in the mid twenties and highs in the thirties.
