Friday Miscellany

After the loss of the duckling and a busy weekend coming up, all I can muster is a random collection today.

Starting with these hosta. Some of my first planted I often wondered if they were too close together. Now that I see how they combine, I'm glad I didn't give them more space!

***

Speaking of color combos, the orange foliage of 'Autumn Brilliance' fern looks strange but oh so right here:

And I've said it before but the fern bed under the deck is really fabulous this year:

The photo doesn't do it justice, especially when the sunlight is coming through the deck skylights. So great!

You know what else is doing really great?

The red-veined sorrel in its "temporary" bed. I have to keep it here now since it's thriving. So huge!

Speaking of huge...

The black bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) has regained the size it lost two winters ago. It will be nice to have all of those cut culms covered up by foliage again!

It's not the biggest bamboo upsize though. That distinction goes to...

...Phyllostachys dulcis this year.

Look at those beautiful fresh culms! I'm considering moving this one from its planter box into the ground. So much work though...

The pond is looking quite nice, even though it is duckling free and the water is green:

I haven't even planted the Colocasia yet (at the back right edge in this photo)!

One more blue (sort of) and green color combo to end with, since that's how I started this post:

Brunnera 'Jack Frost' is thriving here, as is the wild ginger (Asarum canadense) which seems to have escaped a nibbling this year somehow. I don't know why I didn't plant shade lovers like these under the pine years ago.

I hope you saw something here that you liked. Have a great weekend!

  2. As I was looking at your photos, it occurred to me that not a single of the plants you featured would thrive here in the Sacramento Valley without copious watering. Definitely a case of "the grass is always greener on the other side" blues on my part this morning...

  3. Those first two images are especially gorgeous! But damn, really? The cute little guy is gone?

  6. Renee: Thanks! I couldn't tell you what hostas those are so glad you didn't ask. :)

Gerhard: Rain is something we have had plenty of this spring. So hard to imagine not having it...

Loree: yep, killed that first night. Cat? Male duck? Don't know.

Mark/Gaz: I may have spoken too soon, as the Ph. viridis is pushing up a couple of monsters too! :)

Peter: I'm just going to assume that any creature I see in my yard will be around for just a day, and may explode in front of my eyes. That will make things easier (when it doesn't happen)
