Laziness provides opportunity

You saw yesterday how lazy I had been with the walkway, but that's nothing when compared to my approach to mowing the lawn this year. A dry July meant little lawn growth so no need to mow, but then the rains came so frequently we rarely had good mowing conditions. Then it was too long to easily mow, turtles could be hiding anywhere!

The end result is that the back lawn hasn't been mowed for at least 6 weeks, possibly longer. My bright green garden hose is back here, and you can't see even an inch of it -- it's right in front of you!

I've got a meadow back here now!

Actually, what this laziness has given me is an opportunity to finally rid my garden of Pennisetum 'Moudry'! Every little seedling is clearly visible right now, the course blades much longer than anything else growing here. I'll pull them all out, every single one -- at least that's the plan.

In case you're wondering, that purple perilla is not growing in a bed -- that's in the lawn. Yeah.


My other main area of neglect this year has been the fenced veggie garden:

Although it's a feast for the eyes right now (if you like the jungly, plants crammed together look), I really need to get in there and clear everything out for fall planting:

What worries me the most is the pokeweed, which forms a huge taproot. These raised beds (I bet you couldn't tell they were here!) have nice loose soil so I'm hoping they'll pull out, but we'll see.

It's hard to believe that it once looked like this:

That was a few years ago though...

Back to today: there are also 5 or 6 potted perennials that must surely have rooted into the beds too -- I'll have to find those permanent homes too. Oh, and that new fence needs to be finished...

So lazy!

High temperatures of around 78ºF (25ºF) for Sunday and Monday coincide perfectly with my days off, so I hope to get both of these projects and more done then!
