Late summer is vine time in my garden, and today I want to show you the hyacinth bean vines (Lablab purpureus). There are two plantings of this vine growing in my garden this year, both near the southeast corner of the house.
The first has climbed the deck (as intended) and is now blooming. Love these fragrant flowers!
Here they are in context on the deck:
I can't think of a better way to bring something this pretty to the deck -- containers might work but take up so much space.
The second planting is remarkably visible from the kitchen window now:
Remarkable because the plant is along the same wall as the window:
It's going crazy now!
I think I put two plants here -- maybe one would have been enough?
This vine did exactly what I wanted this year: covered the wall as much as possible without grabbing onto it.
Not very many blooms right now, but the foliage is so attractive I'm fine with that.
I didn't intend for it to cascade down over the path -- some of the lower plants are suffering for lack of light I imagine. This late in the season though I don't care.
I'm quite happy with this vine and it will return to my garden every year going forward!
What do you think?
.
"covered the wall as much as possible without grabbing onto it" -- is it growing on something then? (beautiful btw!)
ReplyDeleteLoree: there's a copper pipe trellis back there believe it or not. I've posted about it several times before.
ReplyDeleteGreat foliage and sweet blooms on a vine that doesn't cling to the wall. Who could ask for anything more? Encore!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful indeed. I tried it here but I think it needs more water than I'm able to spare. Like so many things...
