I haven't posted about it yet, but I recently returned from a much-needed vacation trip to Florida. One thing I brought back with me:
This seed. Is it a coconut still in it's husk?
I noticed it on our first day in the beach cottage...
...it was on the ground right outside the back door (which we never used). The back door faces to the right in this image, not toward the beach. Hence we never went that way.
It's a pretty thing, although it was greener when I first picked it up.
I wondered about the green color -- is that normal? My plan is to keep this indoors over winter and then put it outside and see if it will sprout.
I have no idea if this is even possible, but I want to give it a try.
It sure looks weird in my yard right now. (Only out there momentarily for photos)
.
Could sprout, yes. Keep it warm. Even Southern California winters are too cold for coconut palms.
ReplyDeleteIt's a coconut alright. But it wants lots of consistent heat.
ReplyDeleteLook on ebay for sprouted coconut to see how to start them.
ReplyDeleteSo maybe I'll be better off just opening it up and eating it. :)
ReplyDeleteSo did you carry it on the plane or check it? As I crammed a couple of Agaves in my carry-on yesterday morning (flying back from LA) I wondered if this was going to be the time security decided they were weapons. Thankfully they did not.
ReplyDeleteLoree: we drove, so no worries about security. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool souvenir and possible new houseplant!
