Flood!

After a few days of heavy rain in the St. Louis area, heavy flooding is widespread. With perhaps 4" (10cm) of additional rainfall expected today and tomorrow, things are expected to get worse before they get better.

Although my house sits on high ground, my garden is still experiencing some flooding -- particularly the pond.

The rain makes the pond surface so clean, sinking leaves and dust and debris. Too much of the rain too quickly apparently made the pond overflow though, temporarily giving the tadpoles more space to explore.

Unfortunately that extra space quickly disappeared as the excess water drained away, and many tadpoles were stranded.

The only ones that survived were found on leaves, like those in the upper left of this image:

I suppose the leaf surface stayed wet longer than the ground did, allowing the future toads to stay alive until I rescued them.

Hey, an inadvertent selfie in the reflection!

So many more still remain though, and I hear frog and toad mating calls even today.

It would be nice to have a few dry days in a row though...

  1. Sad that you lost so many tadpoles. More than one dry day in a row? What kind of crazy talk is that?

  4. Nature has her ways, for sure. Ponds are great ways to observe and learn. Those tadpoles are lucky to have a benefactor!
