The Fabulous Color of Japanese Maples

Ah, that wonderful, colorful foliage of japanese maples: browns and yellows and reds. Is there a better tree for autumn color?

Oh wait, it's only June.

***

The colors are already here though, and that's because these trees are not a big fan of 95ºF (35ºC) and higher for days in a row, especially with lots of sun.

Pretty though, if you don't get too close to see the scorch.

The shaded leaves are fine, still dark green with the hint of reds. The little red samaras (winged seeds) add a nice touch of healthy color.

This one is completely self-shaded, under the pergola:

This one shows the progression from shade (top) to sun:

I guess it's a good thing that all five of my potted japanese maples died over the winter (didn't I tell you about that?) -- I don't know if I could handle seeing another scorching like this!

  1. Good Grief! I'm sorry to hear about your lost maples. Its hard to believe all 5 were knocked out, it must have been a particularly cold winter. At least those in the ground mades it. Something to be said for not keeping them in pots, if you ever get more maples.

  2. This is why I don't have Japanese maples, even that I love them so. Sorry to hear about your 5 (!) but hopefully these ones in the ground will recover?

  3. They get toasty here, too, and little autumn color unless you include brown, but in spring, aren't they gorgeous?
