What the peck?

The other day I noticed this downy woodpecker on the yucca flower stalk:

Hmmm -- what's he doing there?

Maybe he thought those were other little woodpeckers sitting on the branches...

...and he wanted to join in?  (because they really do look like little birds, don't they?)

But no, he was...

...pecking away!

Predictably.

I suppose if your life is slamming your face into hard wood time and time again, every once in a while you need something soft for a change.

Okay first of all, your Yuccas are pollinated! Wow, we don't have the moth here to take care of that so I never get seedpods. I do see them all over the desert SW when we visit though, and can't help but examine them (since I never see them at home). Often they have tiny holes in them, perhaps woodpeckers love Yucca seeds?

Great pictures! How lucky you were there to get them.

Peter: I didn't even think of that! Of course he's after the seeds!

Loree: I just assumed everybody's yuccas produced seed pods all the time. Mine always have, and I never knew that a specific pollinator was required!

Rebecca: timing is everything if you want to see the good stuff in the garden. :)
